For ungrounded allegations, Prof Lazare Sebitereko has already spent more than 374 days in Makala prison. Below is his message to celebrate his 59th birth anniversary.
My 59th birthday anniversary found me in preventive detention June 2024. At the same time, one year is passed since I was arrested on 27 and 29 June 2024. Thus far God has been faithful.
The dossier has not moved much, a part from the referral decision of my case to the Military Court, nothing else is done yet in terms of hearings. My lawyers and myself are ready to make our defence.
My health has not been improved much. The month of June was again the worst for the 2 first weeks were very bad. But again, I saw the same faithfulness of God accompanying me through and I was allowed to have medical consultation and check up outside the prison.
On other different initiatives, classes of writing and reading finished the first phase and all participants will receive their certificates of participation next Sunday, July 7, 2024. The skill training in paint making has been going on in the month of May and June and the practical part was just amazing, when students were able to mix different elements and produced good paint.
My room was among those painted and it is very nice. As word goes around, many students are registering themselves for the coming training sessions. “How come that you never made these trainings open to all of us”, questioned the Imam of the mosque! I told him that the trainings are open and free to all. The chaplaincy of Brahnam church sent a list of 10 students willing to start the training in August 2024. My joy was to see a young man who befriended us for months, being freed. He couldn’t afford his fees to get liberated, we contributed. “Will it be possible for me to come and stay with you when you are liberated?” he asked!
Each day is a blessing of its own. God has been faithful to the family and friends for this past year of my absence. The work at UEMI has continued despite challenge of my absence.
Your prayers and support not only make me strong, but also hopeful. My stay has been meaningful and helpful to so many in need.
